Tasigo Stay in Harmony: Single-Use Items

As a part of our “Stay in Harmony” sustainability policy, Tasigo Hotel Eskisehir identified the single-use items available in guest rooms as huge waste generators. On 1 July, 2019, we implemented a new policy: “Single-Use Items on Demand.” We placed a card in every room letting guests know they could request single-use items by calling guest relations. We want guests to feel that anything they need is attainable, without creating opportunity for unnecessary waste.

Below is the data on consumption before and after implementing Single-Use Items on Demand.”

We take a six months period for each column.

Note: Our occupancy rate increased from the first period (Before Request Card) (62%) to the second (70%) (After Request Card).

Thanks to the new system, we managed to reduce our plastic waste by more than 350 kg.

From 2020, we started to implement a strict zero-waste policy according to single use plastic items. In place of single-use personal care products, we started offering an “eco basket” that guests could purchase from their rooms. The products within have absolutely no plastics, and they are all sourced from local boutique companies in Turkey. This is also a great way to collaborate and promote local businesses.

We put the personal care products that our guests may need in an "ecological basket" in our rooms. Besides there is absolutely no plastic in the content of the products, and they were all sourced we obtained all of them from local boutique companies in Turkey.

While we offer nature-friendly options to our guests who come to our hotel, we also ensured that these boutique companies are promoted. Due to the high cost of these products, we offered them for sale in a basket, not free of charge. Thus, with the act of purchasing, long-term durable ecological products have replaced single-use plastic products.

In this way, we started to profit directly from our personal care products in the room and reduced the amount of waste from this group of products to zero. We also introduced our guests to a hotel with ecologically conscious products, and directed them to consume more consciously.

By selling our eco-friendly personal care products , we began generating income from products that came at a cost in their single-use form. Our average monthly income was 9.055 TL (826 euro), which is equivalent to 108.669 TL (10.000 euro, 11.500 USD) per year.

Our example shows that it is possible to provide a high-standard of service at a five-star hotel while managing to reduce waste. Providing a more conscious consumption service will also show guests that you care about the environment, and attract more customers in this context.
