Curtain Bluff Honored with CHTA Environmental Sustainability Award at CHIEF 2025

Last month in November, it was announced by the Antigua & Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA) that Curtain Bluff had been awarded the prestigious Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2025 Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF) in Barbados. This accolade recognizes the resort’s longstanding leadership in environmental protection, community empowerment, and the advancement of sustainable tourism across the region.

Craig Marshall, Chairman, Antigua & Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA) stated that “The ABHTA is incredibly proud of the remarkable work done by Curtain Bluff. Their commitment to environmental protection, community development, and responsible tourism stands as an inspiring example for all accommodation providers in Antigua and Barbuda. We celebrate their achievement and look forward to seeing their continued leadership as more properties on the island advance their own sustainability journeys.”

This milestone follows another significant achievement: Curtain Bluff recently became the first property in Antigua to earn Green Globe Platinum certification, marking ten consecutive years of measurable improvements in environmental and social sustainability. This distinction places the resort among an elite group of global hospitality brands demonstrating an unwavering commitment to responsible tourism.

Anique Goodwin, Green Globe administrator for Curtain Bluff said, We are incredibly proud and honored to be recognized for our continued efforts in sustainability. We want to encourage other businesses and individuals to embrace sustainable practices every day to protect our livelihood which is our unique island. Every small effort brings us closer to preserving our world for future generations.”

Curtain Bluff’s award-winning sustainability model is rooted in a comprehensive approach that integrates conservation, operational efficiency, and community development. For more than 63 years, the resort has pioneered water-saving innovations, energy-efficient systems, and waste-reduction initiatives that reduce its environmental footprint while setting new benchmarks for the Caribbean hospitality sector. Central to its philosophy is a deep connection to place - protecting Antigua’s diverse ecosystems and nurturing the wellbeing of the Old Road community, where generations of families have grown up alongside the resort.

The resort’s environmental programs reflect a forward thinking investment in renewable practices. Curtain Bluff utilizes advanced desalination systems, greywater reuse technology, and natural cooling design features that reduce dependence on traditional energy sources. These measures ensure both the preservation of Antigua’s fragile ecosystems and long-term operational sustainability. Guests are invited to participate in curated sustainability experiences that encourage responsible travel, cultural awareness, and authentic connection with Antigua’s natural landscapes.

Curtain Bluff’s commitment to people is equally impactful. Its deep partnership with the Old Road Village spans decades and includes scholarships, school adoption programs, youth sports initiatives, and long-term funding through the Old Road Fund. These programs continue to support educational advancement, community resilience and opportunities for local families.

In addition to its core sustainability initiatives, the resort has eliminated single-use PET bottles in favor of refillable glass alternatives, significantly reducing plastic waste. Its culinary program is powered by partnerships with local farmers and fisherfolk, ensuring that guests enjoy fresh, sustainably sourced ingredients while contributing to the island’s food security and economic vitality.

The CHTA Environmental Sustainability Award acknowledges Curtain Bluff for its exemplary achievements in setting a powerful standard for sustainability in Antigua & Barbuda and the wider Caribbean. The resort’s holistic approach serves as a model for the future of Caribbean tourism.
