Pre-emptive Sustainability at OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO

Surrounded by the vibrant waters of North Malé Atoll, OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO, part of the portfolio of leading hospitality company Atmosphere Core, is celebrated for its thriving house reef and lush tropical vegetation. Yet preserving this natural beauty requires more than chance. Through proactive environmental stewardship, the island resort safeguards the delicate balance between reef, shoreline and vegetation that defines the Maldivian ecosystem.

General Manager Alain Trefois puts it with characteristic clarity, “Helengeli’s greatest strength is that it is still a natural island. The reef, the vegetation and the shoreline all depend on the other in a relationship that has shaped the Maldives for centuries. But with climate change and the pressures facing our oceans and beaches today, that balance cannot be taken for granted. The role of the resort team, he says, is to recognise the early signs of strain and safeguard the island’s equilibrium long before it begins to falter”.

Marine Awareness and Responsible Reef Exploration
Guest education plays an important role in protecting Helengeli’s reef ecosystem. Each week, Marine Biologist Nur Kamilah hosts marine awareness sessions at the newly established Marine Nature Centre. Held on the beach at sunset, these sessions introduce guests to the reef, highlighting the importance of corals, local marine species, and responsible snorkelling practices that protect fragile habitats.

Supporting the Recovery of a Thriving Reef
Helengeli’s house reef is widely regarded as one of the healthiest in North Malé Atoll. According to Dive Centre Manager Ahmed Niyaz, who has spent decades diving across the Maldives, it remains one of the region’s strongest reefs. The reef supports diverse marine life including hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, reef sharks, moray eels, octopus and numerous reef fish species. Rare sightings of the elusive ornate eagle ray have also been recorded. To help protect and preserve this ecosystem, the resort is developing a coral restoration programme led by Marine Biologist Nur Kamilah, where coral fragments are cultivated in a nursery before being replanted onto the house reef to support natural regeneration.

Restoring the Island’s Coastal Green Belt
Beyond the reef, Helengeli’s coastal vegetation forms another critical layer of protection. Native plants help stabilise sand, reduce erosion, and protect the shoreline from wind and wave action.

The resort’s landscaping team propagates native coastal species including beach naukapa magoo (Scaevola taccada) and beach ironwood kuredhi (Pemphis acidula). These plants are well adapted to island conditions such as salt spray, wind and shifting sand.

Scaevola grows low and dense, helping anchor the beach, while ironwood shrubs grow taller and provide stability along exposed shoreline areas. Together, they form part of the natural heylhi, the protective coastal green belt of Maldivian islands.

Using air-layering techniques, the landscaping team propagates hundreds of new plants each season. Once rooted, the young plants are gradually reintroduced along the shoreline to strengthen and extend the island’s natural vegetation belt. It is the sort of work that visitors may not notice, but without it, the island would slowly begin to loosen its grip on the sand beneath it, its edges gradually altered by the persistence of the wind and waves.

Inspiring Environmental Awareness Among Young Guests
Sustainability education also reaches younger visitors through activities at the Kids’ Nature Centre. Children participate in creative and nature-based activities such as painting recycled pots, decorating stones, exploring island vegetation and planting seedlings. Through these experiences, they learn about native plants, the use of coconuts, and the relationship between coral reefs and marine life. These small but meaningful lessons help build early awareness of the natural world.

Helengeli Reef of Wonder
Following a warm Maldivian welcome, guests are gifted a silicone wristband inscribed with ‘Helengeli Reef of Wonder’, to wear throughout their stay. Crafted from durable, food-grade silicone, the bracelet is designed to last well beyond departure—serving as a meaningful keepsake of their time on the island. This thoughtful touch, alongside curated in-villa videos, interactions with the resident marine biologist, and informative reef boards across the resort, is intended to deepen awareness and appreciation of the surrounding marine ecosystem, inspiring a lasting connection to reef conservation.
