Preserving Maldivian Nature for Future Generations at Reethi Faru Resort

Green Globe certification has been awarded to Reethi Faru Resort in the Maldives.Situated in the Raa Atoll, the resort offers a luxurious escape on the secluded private island of Filaidhoo. Glistening crystal clear ocean meets endless white coral sand at this tropical paradise, where a house reef teeming with vibrant marine life lies just offshore.

In 2019, Dr. Vir K.Chopra, then Managing Director of Reethi Faru Resort, provided this leadership statement. ''Going back a long time, when the adverse impact of human activity on the environment began to be globally recognized, I became conscious that each one of us had a responsibility towards the environment. That’s when I decided never to be a free rider where nature and environment were concerned, and I felt that it was an obligation for each one of us to be sensitive to nature around us and preserve it for posterity.

“As climate change is happening and becomes ever more perceptible and the planet is under immense pressure, it is imperative that we take action now to reduce our negative impact on the environment in every way possible. For me, operating in a surrounding such as the Maldives was not only a privilege and a source of great satisfaction but I believed it also came with the responsibility to support the protection of its fragile beauty through sustainable practices and marine conservation.”

To this day, Reethi Faru Resort continues to follow his vision and guidance in making sustainability a core brand pillar of the resort. 

Ecosystem Preservation
Reethi Faru Resort is located on a natural island measuring 600 x 350 metres, where a strong commitment to protecting the original landscape has preserved more than 1160 palm trees and native vegetation, maintaining the island’s tropical character and biodiversity. During the development of the resort, existing trees were carefully relocated rather than removed, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural ecosystem. Today, Reethi Faru remains a lush tropical sanctuary surrounded by native vegetation and flowering plants, offering guests a true barefoot island experience in harmony with nature.

Marine Conservation
As an island resort, marine conservation remains at the core of Reethi Faru's environmental mission. The resort cares for the underwater Maldivian ecosystem through ongoing initiatives. One of the key projects is coral propagation, aimed at revitalizing the delicate coral reefs that are vital to marine biodiversity. By growing and transplanting coral fragments, the resort helps to restore damaged reefs, providing a habitat for countless marine species. Protection of tropical manta rays and sea turtles are other important projects supported by the resort team.

Waste Management and Biogas Production
Reethi Faru Resort adheres to stringent waste segregation practices to reduce the property’s impact on the surrounding ocean. Waste management is a priority in the resort’s environmental approach, which supports responsible resource use across all operations. The resort has implemented an onsite biogas plant that converts food waste into renewable energy. Through a natural biological process called anaerobic digestion, microorganisms break down organic food matter in a sealed, oxygen-free tank. The resulting biogas is used for water heating and cooking in staff kitchens, reducing reliance on conventional gas sources and supporting a more sustainable operational model.

Circular Economy - Glass Carving
The resort team is always looking at new ways to engage visitors and inspire them to embrace a greener lifestyle. As part of its recycling initiatives, Reethi Faru Resort offers glass engraving experiences where guests can create personalized souvenirs to take home. This initiative transforms waste materials into meaningful, functional items through a creative and sustainable process. Empty glass bottles and retired drinking glasses in good condition, which would otherwise be discarded, are carefully cut and polished to create vases, drinking glasses and plant pots. Guests can then create their own unique bespoke items by adding their choice of engraved and decorative motifs such as playful sea turtles. Each repurposed glass item reflects the resort’s ongoing commitment to circular economy practices and responsible resource use.
