U Chiang Mai Hotel Honors the Past With Eyes Fixed on a Greener Future
U Chiang Mai is a luxury boutique hotel in Chiang Mai, the largest city in the north of Thailand and a major cultural hub. The hotel was recently awarded its inaugural Green Globe certification in recognition of the hotel’s sustainable operations.
Ms. Uthairat Namkaew, Hotel Manager at U Chiang Mai, expressed her delight in receiving this notable achievement stating, “Receiving the Green Globe certification is a meaningful milestone for U Chiang Mai. As a 17-year-old property, we are proud to preserve the hotel’s original house as our Residence Lounge while continuing to protect Lanna cultural heritage. Sustainability for us is about honoring our past through local architecture, supporting Northern Thai cuisine sourced from local producers, and our commitment to eliminating single-use plastics, while responsibly caring for our future.”
Ban Klang Wiang – Lanna Cultural Heritage Preservation
From the moment guests arrive, they step deep into the hotel’s cultural past at the Residence Lounge, formerly known as Ban Klang Wiang. The carefully preserved and thoughtfully restored historic house today serves as the hotel’s reception area and library. A welcoming space where history, heritage, artisanal craftsmanship, and hospitality come together. In acknowledgement of the hotel’s building preservation efforts, it was awarded the Conservation Architecture Award (Public Building Category) from the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage in 2009.
Constructed around 1877, Ban Klang Wiang was originally the residence of Phra Nayok Kananukan (Mueang Thippayamonthon [1852–1941]), the founding ancestor of the Thippayamonthon family. The large, European-influenced two-story wooden building is adorned with finely carved wooden vine motifs characteristic of the Gingerbread style, which gained popularity during the reign of King Rama V. The intricate carvings feature on balconies and doors as well as carved sun motifs on the gables on all three sides of the house. Traditional building techniques are further displayed in the walls constructed from overlapping wooden panels that lie beneath a terracotta tiled roof. Fishbone-patterned wooden panels above the front staircase are also incorporated in the framework to enhance ventilation and reduce heat within the house.
Reducing Environmental Impacts
At U Chiang Mai, responsible resource management is at the heart of its daily operations. The hotel’s Thai-Northern cuisine restaurant prioritizes locally sourced ingredients, supporting nearby farmers and producers, and reducing transportation-related environmental impacts. This approach not only ensures freshness and quality but also strengthens the hotel’s connection with the local community.
In addition, a zero single-use plastic policy has been fully implemented. Plastic waste is significantly reduced with the use of refillable dispensers in bathrooms, sustainable packaging alternatives, and encouraging both guests and staff to participate in environmentally responsible practices. Through these initiatives, U Chiang Mai demonstrates that promoting cultural identity and sustainable operations can go hand in hand, creating positive impacts on both the environment and the local economy.
Green Team Initiatives
The Green Team at U Chiang Mai actively promote environmental responsibility through meaningful, hands-on initiatives. Two initiatives involve the creative reuse of waste materials that helps save lives – both human and animal. One of the hotel’s key sustainability activities is the collection of recyclable materials through designated recycle boxes placed throughout the hotel. The collected materials are carefully sorted and donated to the Green Shelter Project, an initiative that builds homes using recycled food packaging. By participating in this program, the team not only reduces waste sent to landfill, it also assists community development by supporting sustainable housing solutions.
The hotel’s partnership with a local wildlife conservation center helps raise awareness of regional biodiversity. In kitchens, unused vegetables remaining from food preparation are carefully selected and hygienically cleaned to ensure they are chemical free and safe for animal consumption. The prepared produce is collected and donated to the Choeng Doi Suthep Wildlife and Nature Education Center where it is used as feed for wildlife.
Many of the native species at the center are unable to return to the wild as they were previously kept in captivity or have been rescued from human possession. A safe and nurturing environment is provided where the animals can live with proper care, nutrition, and rehabilitation support. Through its involvement with this program, U Chiang Mai reduces its food waste, minimizes environmental impact, and contributes to the wellbeing of rescued wildlife.
These initiatives reflect U Chiang Mai’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship, teamwork, and social responsibility, while encouraging both staff and guests to take part in creating a more sustainable future.
