Hotel Maximilian's: Over 300 Years of German Heritage, Shaped by Sustainable Hospitality

Hotel Maximilian's in Germany has been awarded its first Green Globe certification. The hotel is located in Augsburg, the third-largest city in Bavaria and one of Germany’s oldest cities.

Theodor Gandenheimer, Managing Director at Hotel Maximilian’s said, “We are very proud to have achieved our first Green Globe certification. Our hotel has stood for consistency and responsibility for over 300 years – sustainability has always been a lived tradition for us. The Green Globe certification is an important milestone and a strong motivation to continue improving our impact, step by step, together with our team and partners.”

Hotel Maximilian’s is situated in Augsburg’s city center within a historic building structure that has been continuously modernized with state-of-the-art technology. The property combines traditional architecture with current standards of comfort, energy efficiency, and operational reliability. Sustainability is rooted in a long-standing business tradition at the hotel, which has been part of Augsburg’s history for over three centuries. For the entire team, sustainability means preserving heritage, investing for the long term, adapting to future needs, and maintaining the highest standards of hospitality.

“Our longevity as a privately owned hotel reflects resilience, responsible stewardship, and a commitment to lasting value,” added Theodor Gandenheimer.

Over past years, the hotel adopted a structured green framework that is now embedded across all departments. Sustainability is part of regular leadership discussions, and responsibilities are clearly defined to ensure continuous improvement and smooth implementation in daily operations. For example, regarding energy optimization initiatives, approximately 80% of the lighting has been converted to LED and a complete conversion is planned for 2026. Motion detectors control about half of the corridors. The building and event technology is state-of-the-art, supported by a Siemens building management system that was recently upgraded. Refrigeration units, heat exchangers, and pump systems are energy-efficient, with the hotel utilizing a hybrid system of district heating and two heat pumps. The hotel will continue working on energy management strategies to reduce environmental impacts.

Resource efficiency is another key focus in hotel operations, supported by modern building technology and smart processes. The newly opened pool in the wellness area benefits from a modern ultrafiltration system by Grünbeck, which reduces water consumption and minimizes chemical additives. The roof also features green roofs to insulate the building and rainwater harvesting systems decrease water usage. Furthermore, at Hotel Maximilian’s, guests can use MyClimate's CO2 calculator on the property’s website to calculate and offset the CO2 emissions of their trip.

The property’s procurement policy prioritizes local and responsible sourcing of food and beverage products. Kitchens demonstrate an outstanding awareness of regional products while simultaneously striving to reduce packaging and transportation distances.  At Michelin-starred The Sartory, environmental responsibility seamlessly combines with the highest culinary quality. Menus are based on seasonal cycles while vegetarian options form an integral part of the hotel’s strategy to reduce its ecological footprint. In parallel, the hotel supports urban biodiversity through a green rooftop concept where onsite beehives produce Hotel Maximillan’s own Hotel Rooftop Honey.

Hotel Maximilian´s is one of the larger employers in the regional hospitality industry with more than 150 employees and 30 trainees. The hotel promotes inclusivity and diversity within its teams where staff with disabilities have been welcomed, setting a shining example for future generations. Internal training sessions for all employees cover environmental and sustainability topics - raising awareness about water and energy conservation, waste management and recycling strategies, and community engagement initiatives.

Outside in the local community, Hotel Maximilian's regularly supports the Augsburg soup kitchen as part of its CSR programs. This commitment goes beyond occasional donations and demonstrates the hotel's genuine involvement in social initiatives in the city.
