Mövenpick Resort Sharm El Sheikh has successfully achieved its Green Globe Re-certification. Maintaining its Green Globe Platinum status also represents a significant milestone and reflects the consistency of the resort’s long-term environmental and social sustainability efforts. Adding to its list of notable achievements, Mövenpick Resort Sharm El Sheikh was announced as an International Sustainability Awards 2026 Winner this year.
General Manager, Shehab El Din said, “Achieving the International Sustainability Awards 2026 recognition alongside our successful Green Globe 2026 Re-Certification and the continuation of our Platinum status is a strong reflection of the dedication and commitment of our teams. These achievements demonstrate our ongoing efforts to embed responsible resource management, circular thinking, environmental protection, and community engagement into our daily resort operations. We remain focused on delivering measurable and meaningful sustainability initiatives that create long-term environmental and social value, while continuing to uphold the high standards of service and guest experience expected at Mövenpick Resort Sharm El Sheikh.”
First certified in 2012, the Green Globe re-certification demonstrates that sustainability at the property is not viewed as a one-time initiative, but as an ongoing operational commitment to green practices, team engagement and continuous improvement. Together with initiatives such as Second Life Glass, the resort continues to translate its sustainability goals into practical, measurable actions that create lasting value for the environment, the community and future generations.
Second Life Glass: Turning Renovation Waste into a Resource
One of Mövenpick Resort Sharm El Sheikh’s most distinctive sustainability achievements is an innovative circular initiative entitled Second Life Glass that was developed during the renovation of guest rooms. The initiative demonstrates a simple but powerful principle - before purchasing new materials, consider what existing resources can be reused, redesigned and given a second purpose.
Between 1 August and 25 September 2025, instead of disposing of existing shower glass doors, the resort identified a unique opportunity to reuse them.160 tempered shower glass doors, each measuring about 2 metres x 70 centimetres x 1 centimetre, were recovered and transformed into 120 centimetre high glass fencing within the resort.
Approximately 6.5 tonnes of glass were given a second life, reducing the need for newly manufactured fencing materials and reusing valuable resources. The initiative generated approximately EGP 1.6 million in material procurement savings and is estimated to have avoided about 7.8 tonnes of CO₂e associated with the production of equivalent new glass materials.
Safety and quality remained fundamental to the project with reused glass fencing professionally engineered and installed in accordance with applicable safety and engineering requirements.
A Culture of Sustainability and Team Innovation
Behind these achievements is a growing culture in which sustainability is treated as a shared responsibility and a driver of innovation. The Second Life Glass project required teams to look beyond conventional disposal practices and identify a practical new application for materials removed during renovations. Bringing together operational, engineering, procurement and sustainability considerations, the initiative transformed a potential waste stream into a functional architectural feature.
The project also highlights the potential for similar solutions across the hospitality sector. Hotel renovations regularly generate materials that may still have significant functional value. By applying circular thinking at the planning stage, materials can potentially be reused rather than simply thrown away and becoming landfill.
Sustainability Through Action
For Mövenpick Resort Sharm El Sheikh, sustainability is about turning principles into measurable action. The Second Life Glass initiative captures this philosophy perfectly. The initiative was acknowledged at the International Sustainability Awards 2026 and demonstrates how responsible resource management, innovation and operational teamwork can create meaningful environmental and economic value.
As Mövenpick Resort Sharm El Sheikh continues its sustainability journey, it remains committed to developing practical solutions that reduce waste, conserve resources, protect the environment and contribute to a more responsible future for hospitality.
