U Luang Prabang: Small Hotel Makes a Big Sustainable Impact

U Luang Prabang has officially achieved its first Green Globe certification, a prestigious milestone that recognizes the boutique hotel's deep-rooted commitment to sustainable hospitality. U Luang Prabang is a peaceful sanctuary of 40 elegant rooms and suites located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang in Laos. The property is the first hotel in Luang Prabang, and second in the country after sister property Eastin Vientiane, to earn this certification.

"Green Globe helped our entire team gain a much broader understanding of sustainability, going far beyond waste reduction or pollution control alone. The certification process validated many of the practices we had already implemented since opening, while also encouraging us to continue improving our operations at every level. We may be a small hotel, but we firmly believe that every small action matters," said Guillermo Bastarrica, General Manager of U Luang Prabang.

For U Luang Prabang, sustainability was never a checklist added after the fact; it has been an integral part of the property's vision since the pre-opening phase. Rather than treating green initiatives as standalone programs, the hotel has successfully integrated responsible and meaningful practices into its daily operations - proving that boutique-scale properties can drive significant, positive change.

In its entirety, hotel operations aim to protect the environment while preserving the unique traditions of the UNESCO World Heritage town. Set amidst historic architecture, sacred temples, and the gentle rhythms of local life, U Luang Prabang is committed to minimising environmental impact through effective resource management, waste reduction, and thoughtful sourcing. Equally important is its dedication to supporting the local community - celebrating Lao traditions, partnering with local artisans and suppliers, and creating opportunities that benefit the destination beyond the hotel’s walls.

The hotel's sustainability strategy is anchored by three core green achievements:

Zero-Plastic Policy
From opening day, U Luang Prabang eliminated single-use plastic amenities and packaging wherever operationally possible. This foundational initiative has successfully shaped both the daily internal operations and the mindful experience of every guest who stays at the property.

Empowering the Local Supply Chain
The hotel actively prioritizes local procurement to reduce transportation emissions and unnecessary packaging. U Luang Prabang partners with small scale vendors, independent businesses, and artisan producers across Laos. The hotel prefers suppliers located within walking distance with coffee sourced from Saffron Coffee - a social enterprise in Northern Laos - that is freshly delivered from a roastery next door as well as local breads and pastries baked just metres away.

Investing in Local Talent
Beyond environmental conservation, U Luang Prabang champions human sustainability. The hotel's recruitment strategy balances seasoned hospitality professionals with younger local team members starting their careers, offering continuous on-the-job training and long-term professional development.

With this inaugural certification, U Luang Prabang clearly demonstrates how cultural heritage preservation, community empowerment, and environmental responsibility can seamlessly coexist in one of Southeast Asia's most cherished destinations.

Please see the hotel’s Sustainability page for further information about its green practices.
