Mövenpick Hotel Centaurus Islamabad: First Hotel in Pakistan to Achieve Green Globe Certification
Mövenpick Hotel Centaurus Islamabad has been awarded its inaugural Green Globe certification. Mövenpick Centaurus Islamabad is the first hotel in Pakistan to receive this prestigious certification. The certification marks the successful implementation of a comprehensive set of sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and promoting responsible operations across the property.
Mövenpick Centaurus Islamabad is committed to continuously enhancing its sustainability performance through measurable actions, innovation, and team engagement. By integrating responsible practices across all areas of operation, the hotel aims to contribute meaningfully to environmental stewardship while delivering exceptional guest experiences in line with global sustainability standards.
The Mövenpick Hotel Centaurus Islamabad Team
Energy conservation is a main priority. In support of resource efficiency, motion sensor systems have been installed in back-of-house areas to optimize energy usage and prevent unnecessary consumption. Further strengthening its sustainability efforts, Mövenpick Centaurus Islamabad has achieved a 100% transition to LED lighting throughout the property. This shift has substantially lowered energy consumption and reduced the hotel’s overall carbon footprint. In public areas, natural potted green plants have also replaced cut flowers which not only enhance air quality but also cool surroundings, promoting a more sustainable and eco-friendly environment.
Significant steps have been taken in water conservation. Low-flow water fixtures have been installed in all guest rooms and kitchen areas, while sensor water taps are fitted in public areas. Additionally, all hotel restrooms are equipped with dual-flush toilets, enabling efficient water usage without compromising guest comfort. A linen and towel reuse program has been introduced in guest rooms, encouraging guests to participate in water and energy saving initiatives.
As part of its waste management strategy, the hotel has eliminated single-use plastic from its operations, reinforcing its commitment to reducing plastic pollution. All guest room amenities have been transitioned to sustainable alternatives, with remaining items being replaced progressively as existing stock is phased out. All guest bathrooms are equipped with wet amenity dispensers, effectively reducing 100% of single-use plastic. Food waste and general hotel waste are systematically recycled through responsible waste segregation and recycling practices, contributing to a circular economy and minimizing landfill volume. Recycling bins are also placed across all public areas to support waste segregation efforts by staff members and visitors alike.
Sustainability practices have been fully embedded within the hotel’s kitchen and Food & Beverage operations, forming an integral part of daily management practices. Improved waste segregation, careful resource management, and ongoing team awareness ensure that green practices are actively carried out within day-to-day culinary operations. A key initiative is the adoption of the Winnow system, which enables precise monitoring of food waste, improves production forecasting, and significantly reduces waste across all food outlets. This technology-driven approach supports sustainable resource utilization while enhancing operational efficiency.
In parallel, Mövenpick Centaurus Islamabad prioritizes responsible sourcing by preferring locally procured products wherever possible and aligning purchasing practices with sustainable standards and Green Globe principles. At KOH, Mövenpick Hotel Centaurus Islamabad's signature Pakistani restaurant, an authentic culinary journey is offered through the country's diverse regional flavours. Eco-conscious dining is enjoyed by guests when savouring traditional menus from biryanis and curries to sizzling kebabs.
In line with the hotel’s sustainability management plan (SMP), quality remains an essential strategic objective - supported by continuous guest feedback, monthly leadership reviews, and regular Leading Quality Assurance audits - to ensure consistent service excellence and brand alignment.
Staff engagement is also fostered through various environmental and community initiatives that enlighten and create positive change. For World Environment Day, the entire team at Mövenpick Centaurus Islamabad came together for a special tree planting event. For this year's 2026 "Inspired by Nature" theme, every hotel department was represented with team members stepping up to plant their own saplings, which will gradually sink roots in the ground and later become trees – a living evergreen symbol for a sustainable future. In short, this simple action is not just about planting a tree, it is about growing a shared responsibility for the planet.
On World Kindness Day in November 2025, the hotel’s team visited Pakistan Sweet Homes to support its mission of empowering orphaned children through education, care, and opportunity. The visit included an introduction to the foundation's inspiring journey, student performances, and engaging activities with the children. The team also shared food and Mövenpick’s signature desserts with the children, creating meaningful moments of connection while celebrating the resilience and potential of every child.
