Fairmont Mara Safari Club Achieves Green Globe Recertification, Strengthening Its Commitment to Responsible Tourism
The Team at Fairmont Mara Safari Club
A reaffirmation of Fairmont Mara Safari Club’s ongoing commitment to conservation, environmental
stewardship and responsible tourism in the Maasai Mara.
Fairmont Mara Safari Club has been awarded Green Globe Recertification for the third year, reinforcing its continued commitment to responsible tourism, environmental stewardship and community engagement within the Maasai Mara ecosystem.
“Sustainability at Fairmont Mara Safari Club is not simply about achieving a certification; it is about creating a lasting positive impact on our environment, our colleagues, our guests and the communities that surround us. Our Green Globe Recertification is an important milestone, but more importantly, it motivates us to continuously improve how we operate and to find practical ways of protecting the Mara for generations to come,” said Stephen Keriga, Lodge Manager.
Located within one of Kenya’s most significant wildlife landscapes, the camp’s approach to sustainability is reflected in its day-to-day operations and range of initiatives focused on biodiversity conservation, responsible resource use, sustainable food production and community engagement.
At the heart of the camp’s biodiversity efforts is its beekeeping project, which supports pollination, honey production and sustainable livelihoods. The initiative provides a safe environment for bees while creating opportunities for colleagues and members of surrounding communities to develop practical beekeeping skills.
Honey produced through the project is incorporated into the camp’s operations, including the kitchen and bar, as well as selected guest experiences and giveaways. The project also provides a platform for future training, mentorship, and technical support for local beekeepers, with opportunities to expand the distribution of bee colonies and queens being explored. As the project develops, the team is also exploring a small-scale honey processing and packaging facility that would meet appropriate food safety and HACCP requirements, creating an avenue for local beekeepers to process and package honey safely and efficiently.
The camp’s organic kitchen garden provides another practical expression of its approach to responsible food production. The garden supplies the culinary team with fresh produce including ginger, basil, carrots, parsley, dill, fennel, cucumber and lettuce that is grown using organic manure and without herbicides. By bringing food production closer to the kitchen, the garden supports the camp’s farm to fork approach while reducing reliance on produce transported from distant markets. It also forms part of the property’s broader approach to responsible resource use, linking food production, consumption, and waste management.
In line with Fairmont Mara Safari Club’s sustainability management strategy, energy and water conservation, food waste reduction, single-use plastic reduction and sustainable consumption are prioritized across the camp.
Resource use is monitored across the property’s operations, allowing teams to identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. Sustainability awareness is further supported through colleague engagement and training programs, and through Green Team activities, encouraging responsible practices as part of everyday operations.
Opportunities for guests to participate directly in conservation efforts is also provided through the Leave a Mark initiative. The program supports the planting of indigenous trees in designated areas within the camp and surrounding communities and schools, contributing to vegetation regeneration and biodiversity. The initiative creates a tangible connection between the safari experience and protection of the surrounding Kenyan landscape. Guests leave satisfied, knowing that their positive contribution will extend well beyond their stay.
Together, the camp’s many initiatives form part of Fairmont Mara Safari Club’s broader commitment to responsible hospitality and the long-term protection of the Maasai Mara’s natural environment. For Fairmont Mara Safari Club, responsible hospitality is closely connected to the landscape in which it operates. From supporting biodiversity and local livelihoods to giving guests an opportunity to contribute to the continued regeneration of the Mara.
